WITH the recession being blamed for a spike in burglaries and robberies and plans to close rural Garda stations on the horizon in the upcoming budget, the need for increased security is taking on a much greater importance.

WITH the recession being blamed for a spike in burglaries and robberies and plans to close rural Garda stations on the horizon in the upcoming budget, the need for increased security is taking on a much greater importance.

With this in mind, a Mallow-based company is offering 24/7 security with people’s recessionary budgets in mind.

“We believe that you can’t put a price on peace of mind – but home security systems which can be remotely monitored 24/7 are not as expensive as you would think,” says John Finnegan of Computronics Solutions. “We can come up with a security solution for virtually any budget”.

Computronics Solutions is a leader in intelligent digital security systems, with home and business owners able to monitor the cameras via their smart phones or computer link. The motion sensor cameras are also specially designed to zoom onto car registrations and have a half mile radius.

“We find that with people commuting further and further from home for work daily and houses being left empty for hours on end, they want to literally be able to keep an eye on their homes,” said John. “Regular, monitored alarm systems simply alert the Gardai or companies to the fact that your house has been entered, while the camera systems can help to prevent burglaries in the first instance and capture vital details to help track the culprits down immediately.”

The Central Statistics Office has recently revealed an 8.5% increase in robberies and burglaries this year alone.

According to a recent nationwide survey, Cork City and County is the third most burgled in Ireland (excluding Dublin) and November is traditionally the month when most burglaries occur.

Worryingly, most houses are occupied when a break-in occurs and the most common form of entry is through the back door of the property.

Add to that the Government plans to close rural Garda stations, it could make those living in isolated areas even more vulnerable to opportunistic thieves.

“Many of our clients come to us after they have been burgled. Most people have house or contents insurance, but it’s the loss of their personal items and the fact that someone has been in their house that affects them more,” said John. “We say that prevention is the first line of defence against burglaries.”

Computronics are based in Shortcastle and can be contacted on 022 – 20527.

Customer notification re flooding in thailand.

As you may be aware, there has been unprecedented flooding in Thailand which has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands more. Our thoughts and wishes naturally go out to these people and their families.
These floods have also had a major effect on the Internal Hard Drives section of our business. This is due to fabrication plants being forced to close and many other Hard Drives component fabrication plants also closing due to the flooding.

At this point supply is severely affected with no clear visibility as to when the situation will ease as it continues to rain and we wait for the flood waters to subside.

As a result, internal hard drives are only available via our sales line 022 20527. This is so we do not sell what we may not be able to get from our suppliers and ultimately disappoint you, our customers.

We will post more information as and when we receive it.

Once again, our thoughts are with those people affected in Thailand by this both from our Hard Drive partners and also the wider Thai community.

Security firm Symantec has accused Facebook of leaving end-user data open to third parties and advertisers in hundreds of thousands of applications.

Security firm Symantec has accused Facebook of leaving end-user data open to third parties and advertisers in hundreds of thousands of applications.

The problem stems from “access tokens” that act like spare keys within Facebook applications, and the issue had gone undetected “over the years”, according to the security firm.

“Third parties, in particular advertisers, have accidentally had access to Facebook users’ accounts including profiles, photographs, chat, and also had the ability to post messages and mine personal information,” said Nishant Doshi on the official Symantec blog, although he admitted that he had no evidence that third parties had made use of the security flaw.

There is no good way to estimate how many access tokens have already been leaked since the release Facebook applications back in 2007

“Facebook iFrame applications inadvertently leaked access tokens to third parties like advertisers or analytic platforms. We estimate that over the years, hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties.”

Although Facebook said Symantec’s report contained “inaccuracies”, the social network said it had since closed the hole and didn’t believe third parties had made use of the open invitation to raid application data.

“We have conducted a thorough investigation which revealed no evidence of this issue resulting in a user’s private information being shared with unauthorised third parties,” Facebook spokeswoman Malorie Lucich told Reuters in a statement.

However, according to Symantec, data scrapers and other personal information companies could still use the tokens that have already been leaked over the years.

“We fear a lot of these tokens might still be available in log files of third-party servers or still being actively used by advertisers,” Doshi said.

“Concerned Facebook users can change their Facebook passwords to invalidate leaked access tokens. There is no good way to estimate how many access tokens have already been leaked since the release Facebook applications back in 2007.”

Symentec said access tokens were “like spare keys granted by you to the Facebook application”. Applications can use these tokens or keys to perform certain actions on behalf of the user or to access the user’s profile, the company said.
